Songs in Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris.

In the summer of 1960, a young Vermont boy, Benjy, sees Earlie Jones and con man Omar Duvall fighting in the woods near his home. Earlie is later found dead. When Duvall insinuates himself into the lives of Benjy's family, Benjy's mother--divorced from her alcoholic husband--is particularly vulnerable. Strong language and some violence. Bestseller.
This book was very hard to finish, but stubborn me, I held out to the bitter
end. Bitter doesn't even come close to describing it. the story is a long,
dark, often times quite depressing one. The lives of all involved are
littered with problems large and small. The language goes beyond strong,
it's frequent and very graphic. I read this book because I'd heard so much
about it, I think it was an Oprah book club book. I don't know if I would
necessarily recommend this book to just anyone. It's a long difficult,
emotionally draining book. At the end I actually hated the Mother in the story
and was sickened by some of her actions. It's a complicated weave of lives,
events and emotions. I would have to give this one a 2 out of 5.
